10 years of VLT

27th May marked the 10th anniversary of "The First Light" of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) project. Since then, the VLT project has been transformed into a system of four eight-metre telescopes.

The first photographs were made by VLT on the night of 25th/26th May 1998 and the "first light" was announced on 27th May. The "first light" is a term which means that a telescope is practically ready for scientific application.
Four VLTs are located in Paranal in Chile on the Atakama desert 2600 m above sea level. Each of them measures 8.2 metres in diameter. This is one of the most modern optic observation instruments in astronomy. They can operate together as an interferometer observing one object.

These are instruments that are highly valued by researchers, and the demand to use these telescopes exceeds available observation time sixfold. The academic outcome resulting from VLT observations covers many areas. In 2007 alone there were 500 academic publications.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) owner of VLT is an organisation uniting over a dozen European countries, the aim of which is astronomical research. In recent years, it was joined by the United Kingdom (2002), Finland (2004), Spain (2006) and the Czech Republic (2007). Austria and Estonia will become members in the near future. In Poland, from the beginning of 2007, astronomrts are trying to convince authorities that our country should join ESO. CZA
