Artistic elite attends opening of new Lodz art museum building

A new building of Lodz Art Museum, Europe's oldest modern art museum opened in Lodz, central Poland on Thursday.

The gala opening was attended by representatives of world's nine famous artistic institutions including the Abteiberg Museum from Moenchengladbach (Germany), Museu de Arte Contemporanea from Brazil and Guggenheim Museum of New York. The new museum is located in a revitalised post-factory building at the premises of the Lodz Manufaktura. The 1st exhibition will open in October.
Museum director Jaroslaw Suchan told a news conference that "this will be the only museum of contemporary art in Poland."

In his opinion the building meets the world's highest requirements for an exhibition premises. "Owing to this we will be able to borrow pieces of art by the world's famous artists and strike up cooperation with the most serious artistic institutions world-wide," he said. KM
