IIASA - International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg by Vienna was established in 1972 as an international non-governmental research body, having for its purpose to analyze and to develop suggestions for solving the problems essential for the entire humanity, that is - global, concerning the Earth as a whole, and universal, that is - appearing everywhere, in all the societies and economies. Nowadays, there are 18 national member organizations of IIASA, including those from the United States, Russia, Japan, China and India.

The Institute played a special role in the development of the scientific basis for the so-called sulfur protocol (RAINS model of pollutant transport and impact), in the work on the Kyoto protocol, in elaboration of the demographic forecasts for the world, and in the development of energy-related global forecasts. One of the currently most important initiatives of IIASA is associated with the energy futures of the world, including both potential paths of development, and the ways to resolve the related problems, including energy safety. Poland was one of the founding members of the Institute and since then, always a very active member of IIASA. Currently, our country faces several challenges and problems, in particular in the domains of energy and environment, and collaboration with IIASA might be very helpful in providing adequate responses to these challenges, and is exploiting the opportunities that we have as well.
