EU to subsidize European Centre of Solidarity

The EU will assign more than 140 mn zloty for the construction of the European Centre of Solidarity (ECS) in Gdansk.

An an initial agreement to this effect was initialled here Monday by Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski, Gdansk mayor Pawel Adamowicz, ECS director Father Maciej Zieba and Solidarity leader Janusz Sniadek.
The ECS construction, at the premises of the former Gdansk Shipyard is to cost more than 292ßmn zloty. Gdansk city will assign 152 mn zloty.

The initial agreement specifies the scope of tasks necessary for the drafting of an application motion to the EC. Full application motions will be send to Brussels at the end of 2009.

According to Adamowicz, the construction should start at the turn of 2009 and 2010 so that part of it be ready for the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Solidarity trade union in August 2010. KM
