Experimental geothermal power plant at Łódź Technical University

Industrial application of geothermal energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources. Significant technological advance in this field requires science-research development as well as devising and creating new power circuits and intense education of a specialist engineering staff. Practice and achievements of other countries in this field indicate that there is a need for creating national research centres equipped with experimental installations and power plants. This is why a new experimental geothermal plant is being established at the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machines at Łódź Technical University.

As Ewa Chojnacka, the university's spokesperson informed, "The new investment is an important element of the Łódź Technical University's centre, which is a base for science-research and education experiments in the field of geothermal energy. Thanks to this base, the user of the new site - the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machines - will be able to educate new engineering staff for the energy sector that will be able to meet all EU requirements."
The newly opened building includes rooms that are designed as geothermal power plants, research laboratories, computer laboratories and a multimedia auditorium for 120 people. The research centre measuring 1193 square metres is fully integrated with the other buildings of the Institute.

"The new investment is connected with a plan to utilise geothermal sources located in Łódź Technical University grounds. This is the first stage of construction of a geothermal power plant and sports centre for the university, which includes a 50 metre swimming pool" - Ewa Chojnacka explained. The cost of the investment was PLN 6.8 million and was covered by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
