Kielce secondary school pupils renovate Bernardynski cemetery in Lithuania
2008-06-20 08:37:45
Five secondary school pupils from the Jozef Szermentowski Art School in Kielce have commenced their two-week work-practice at one of the oldest and most destroyed cemeteries in Vilnius.
"The participation of young Polish people in renovating this cemetery, which is proof of our joint heritage and history, will not only help teach the children more, but will also help us understand each other better" - said Grazina Dremaite, historical heritage conservator from the Adam Mickiewicz Polish-Lithuanian Cooperation Promotion Foundation.
Two years ago, the Polish Adam Mickiewicz Foundation and the Council for Preserving the Memory of Fighting and Suffering signed an agreement, which launched the conservation programme of the cemetery. The cemetery should be completely renovated by 2010, the 200th anniversary of its establishment. The funds for renovation will come from Poland (approximately EUR 500,000) and Lithuania (the exact sum remains unknown).
Dremaite explained that over a period of three years, 50 gravestones were renovated. These are primarily graves of 1863 insurgents, Home Army soldiers, Professors from Stefan Batory University. According to plans, 40 more graves will be renovated this year as well as catacombs.
The school children from Kielce are the first group of young people from Poland to take part in renovation work. Next year, joint work practice for Polish and Lithuanian school pupils is planned.
Bernardynski cemetery is located in the old part of Vilnius, on Vilnia River. During the 50 year Soviet occupation, it was significantly damaged but survived, unlike other historical Vilnius cemeteries. It was probably rescued due to the fact that it is the place of rest of Feliks Dzierzynski's mother - Helena nee Januszewska. It is also the burial site of many writers, poets, actors, professors, priests and soldiers. AKI
