Polish engineers will design refineries in India and the US

Designs, including those of huge refineries in the USA and India will be made in Poland. The American company - Bechtel, is creating an engineering centre in Poland and wants its branch to participate in the largest construction designs in the world. "The experience of most Polish engineers usually concerns many smaller projects. Our idea is to involve them in preparing complete conceptual designs for large Bechtel projects all the world round" - Jan Łaski, president of Bechtel Polska, informed.

Other projects that Polish engineers will be involved in include the construction of a huge gas liquefying centre in Angola and mining and metallurgy investments in Canada.
The projects relate to conceptual designs, i.e. preliminary designs that create the image of the entire project. This is followed by a detailed construction design, which is done in Chinese and Indian offices, where it is much cheaper to do so. The engineering centre, which is now being established in Warsaw should employ 400 engineers, three quarters of whom should be employed by 2011. By the end of this year alone, the centre should employ 80 engineers. Recruitment was commenced in February and so far the company has employed a dozen or so people (mainly for management positions).

"We have very many good applications. We can see that we have plenty of talented engineers and technical university graduates who would like to participate in global projects without having to leave Poland. The advantage of Polish engineers is a broad education, which is not limited - as in many other countries - to a narrow specialisation" - Łaski noted.

The Polish Bechtel centre is under the patronage of the concern's sector that specialises in oil and gas installation engineering, though it has already been established that the Polish office will focus on power, metallurgy and mining industry constructions. The objective is to focus on global projects as there are few such investments held in Poland. The Warsaw centre offers jobs to chemical and process engineering graduates, apparatus and piping designers, mechanics and electrics engineers, specialists in the field of measurement and controlling devices who have experience in the petro-chemical, oil or chemical industry.

The Warsaw centre is intended to be one of the main engineering centres in Europe. Bechtel is one of the largest engineering and construction companies in the world. Its main headquarters are located in San Francisco, California. In 40 branches all over the world, it employs 40,000 people, mainly constructors and designers. Last year, the company's turnover was USD 27 billion.

The company participated in the construction of Hong Kong airport, creating a new complex for utilising chemical weapons for the US government, constructing motorways in Romania, designing refineries in Jamnager (India) and Aluminium works In Fjardaal (Iceland), extending Jubail city in Saudi Arabia, modernising the London underground and constructing the Hoover Dam and Channel Tunnel.
