Slovenia's ambassador receives letter of support for EIT

Slovenia's ambassador to Poland Jozef Drofenik Wednesday received a letter with 170,000 signatures supporting Poland's south-western city of Wroclaw as a location of European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Slovenia is holding EU presidency by the end of June.

A decision on the location of EIT Management Council was to be taken on May 30 at a meeting of EU ministers, but will probably be taken after summer holidays.
Slovenia's ambassador praised the signature collection action but said he did not know his country's position on EIT. Poland is among leading candidates, he added.

"The institute means two things. Very important investments in Polish science, investments directly in Wroclaw to attract very innovative firms. It does not matter whether it is Wroclaw, Poznan or Warsaw as long as it is in Poland," said Szymon Butkowski from Foundation Project: Poland which organized the signature collecting action.

The letter with signatures will be given to all PMs and science ministers in EU countries and to all ambassadors of EU countries in Warsaw.

The European Commission originally proposed to establish European Institute of Technology, on the model of famous MIT based in the U.S, with the aim to speed up knowledge transfer to boost innovation. Due to budget restriction EC proposed that the EIT should be a network of cooperating Knowledge and Innovation Communities.

Next to Vienna/Bratislava, and Budapest, Wroclaw is considered to be the main candidate for EIT Council location. ID
